Abstract

The Siluk-Panggang road section has provincial road status and serves as a primary collector road. Because of the sharp horizontal alignment (AH) and large vertical alignment (AV), this road segment has a high potential for traffic accidents. The goal of this study was to assess road geometry, horizontal alignment (AH), and vertical alignment (AV) using the 2020 Highways Regulations regarding Road Geometric Design Guidelines. This study aims to identify accident characteristics, analyze the relationship between road geometrics and accidents, and provide technical recommendations for road design geometric improvements using AutoCAD Civil 3D 2015 modeling to achieve a safe road This study employs quantitative methods in conjunction with secondary data in the form of accident statistics and road geometric modeling using AutoCAD Civil 3D software 2015. The number of serious accidents on this road in 2018 was 17, with both front and rear collisions. This road has a number of lanes, and the width of the road shoulder meets the requirements; however, the width of the traffic lane does not. Based on the geometric modeling of the road, 12 AH (bends) can be identified, with 9 Spiral-Circle-Spiral (SCS) bends, 1 Spiral-Spiral (SS), and 2 Full-Circle bends (FC). In addition, there are 14 arches for AV, with 7 convex curves and 7 concave curves. However, there are 7 bends with small bend radii, the slope is greater than 7%, and the vertical curvature is expressed as the K value, which does not meet the requirements. Modeling-based technical recommendations include reducing the number of AH to 10 bends (9 SCS bends and 1 SS bend) and 13 AV (6 convex vertical curves and 7 concave vertical curves).
