Abstract

Students’ boredom is one of the obstacles of a learning process in classroom. Undeniably, boredom often occurs in the learning process in classroom. This research aims to identify the causes of students’ boredom during learning process and the strategies used by students of English Language Education Department (ELED) batch 2018 to overcome their boredom. This research used a quantitative research approach with a survey research and utilize questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. The data was taken at ELED batch 2018 with a population 216 students. Therefore, the respondent were 140 students. Furthermore, the data of this research were analyzed using descriptive statistic in statistic software to find out several causes of students’ boredom faced by students of ELED batch 2018. The result of the mean scores showed that the most of students of ELED batch 2018 are moderately experienced boredom during learning process in classroom. The result showed that the three highest mean scores are a duration of the lesson is too long with a mean score 2.86, being over-challenging by a difficult material with a mean score 2.70, and having a bad mood with a mean score 2.70. Besides, the most of students of ELED batch 2018 are moderately apply several strategies to overcome their boredom during learning process in classroom. It showed from the result of the mean scores. The most common strategy used by students is a cognitive approach strategy with a self-reminder of not to disappointing parents by failing in the course with mean score 2.96. Furthermore, the remaining highest mean scores of the result are a cognitive avoidance by distract themselves of thinking what to do after class is over with a mean score 2.69 and a cognitive approach strategy with a vii self-reminder of how much students like and respect the lecturer with a mean score 2.66.
