Abstract
Reading is the receptive skill that students can obtain plethora of information and open their insight. Moreover, reading journal articles are significant among students or even scholars over the world. This study investigated about the students’ perceptions on the strategies and also the challenges in comprehending an English journal article as the research questions. The approach of this study uses qualitative method, which involves an interview were asking several questions to collect data was required. The subjects of this study consisted of six students of batch in 2017 at ELED of PUY. The participants are students that enrolled and were active students of English Language Education Department of Private University of Yogyakarta. In the end it was is indicated that students were using several strategies to comprehend an English journal article such as skimming the article, utilizing the translator tool, asking those who better understand the reading, and highlighting the important part of the reading. Furthermore, it also indicates that there were challenges with the task, as lack of English language exposures, the article contains difficult vocabulary, difficult to get the point of the reading, and demanding more time and focus during the reading.
