Abstract

Students required to fluemt in English when students come to the university. In reality, the students might still feel difficult in learning English. Some students probably still lack of basic English. This leads to the misunderstanding of the course content while reading novel and affect to students’ competence. This study aims to investigate students’ perception on the challenges of reading novel at English Education Department. This study was conducted at English Education Department at a private university in yogyakarta. The descriptive qualitative design was used as a research method of this study. The participantswere two female and two male students from batch 2019. the data gathered by interview. Based on this study, showed that there were some problems faced by the students. They are confusing grammar, low vocabulary mastery, irrelevant topic to the context, low interest in reading, and the last uncomfortable reading space. Most of the problems they mentioned were based on their experience in reading class
