Abstract
Background: Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is an increasing global health issue
that requires special treatment called hemodialysis. Most of the people with
chronic renal failure have anemia and in a certain condition, they need a blood
transfusion (PRC) to reach the targeted hemoglobin level.
Objective: To determine the relationship of blood transfusion (PRC) and iron
status in chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis.
Method: This research is an observational study using an analytic cross-sectional
design. It involved 30 samples of medical record data from June 2018 - May 2019
at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital Yogyakarta. Blood transfusion (PRC)
was the independent variable and iron status including SI, TIBC, and SAT was the
dependent variable. They were analyzed using the non-parametric test called
Kendalls tau_b correlation test.
Results: The results show that 17 patients (56.7%) get a blood transfusion and 13
patients (43.3%) did not. CRF patients who underwent hemodialysis with normal
SI levels reach 33.3% and decrease by 66.7%. Patients have decrease (50%),
normal (36.7%), and increase (13.3%) for TIBC levels. Whereas patients with
decrease, normal, and increase SAT levels are 53.3%, 40%, and 6.7%
respectively. The results of the Kendalls tau_b correlation test show significant
results with values of p=0.040 for SI, p=0.019 for TIBC, and p=0.001 for SAT.
Conclusion: There is a relationship between blood transfusion (PRC) and iron
status in CRF patients undergoing hemodialysis.
