Abstract

Background: Oral cavity cancer continues to be a serious problem in the last few decades. History of smoking and alcohol consumption have been identified as major risk factors for oral cancer. Even so, public awareness about the dangers of their habits is still low. Methods: This research has a descriptive qualitative design with a case series approach. The population in this study were patients who came for treatment at RSUD dr. Soetomo Surabaya, SMF Surgical Oncology division with complaints of cancer in the oral cavity and was willing to participate as an informant in this study. There were 10 respondents who were willing to become informants. Results: The results were obtained if 9 out of 10 research subjects experienced the appearance of cancer on the tongue with an anatomical pathology examination result of 90% due to Squamous Cell Carcinoma. History of exposure to cigarette smoke had the highest frequency in this study. Most of the patients were male. And most of the patients who came for treatment were already in an advanced stage. Conclusion: Oral cavity cancer is more dominant in the male sex with histopathological lesions of Squamous Cell Carcinoma and the most frequent history of habit is exposure to cigarette smoke.
