Abstract

Background: The role of the family is needed by stroke patients because it has a positive impact
on patient care and health. However, long-term care of post-stroke patients will be a problem for
families in decreasing the level of life satisfaction, a burden for caregivers both physically,
psychologically, and spiritually. The heavier the burden felt by the caregiver, the heavier the
emotional level felt by the caregiver, therefore caregivers need care in reducing the burden they
feel, namely by providing psychoeducational therapy. Psychoeducation is a therapy that
provides information and education to caregivers, thus psychoeducation is the right therapy in
reducing caregiver's burden. Objective: To determine the effect of psychoeducational therapy on
caregiver burden in caring for stroke patients. Methods: This literature review uses 3 databases:
Google Scholar, Ebsco, and Proquest 2015-2020 publications. Findings from the quasiexperimental study and the included rct were extracted and pooled, guided by the Joanna Briggs
Institute (JBI). Systematic review using Ebsco, PubMed and PROQUEST databases. Keywords
“Stroke” “Caregiver” “Load” “Physical” “Education”. A total of 7,664 articles. The final
result was 7 articles that met the review requirements. Results: By providing psychoeducational
therapy, it can reduce the caregiver's burden, including the subjective burden and the objective
burden. The form of family psychoeducation therapy that is carried out provides health
education and training regarding all kinds of health problems experienced by sick family
members and caregivers, about stress management, and burden management. The provision of
health education and training is in the form of lectures, discussions with families, distributing
leaflets to be read and discussed together, as well as demonstrating and training how to
overcome the perceived burden. Conclusion: From this systematic review, it can be concluded
that psychoeducational therapy is one of the effective ways that can be used for family therapy
with psychosocial problems due to physical illness, such as the burden felt by the family due to
treatment that has an impact on the family's socioeconomic and family functioning disorders
