Abstract
Nickel chrome palting is one of the surface treatment processes using direct
electric current (DC) with an electrolyte solution of a certain compound as a
conducting medium. The electric current helps transfer the coating metal ions to the
coated metal, the ions are obtained from the coating anode assisted by the liquid
electrolyte medium used.
Galvanizing, Nickel Chrome plating is one of the surface treatments that are
often encountered in everyday life, one of which is the speed control lever used in
the Kubota machine which has actually been coated with a galvanizing technique
but from the results of field identification the corrosion rate is still high, therefore
innovation is needed to overcome this. This study aims to determine the corrosion
resistance of the original and nickel-chrome plated specimens. Salt Spray Test is a
test tool to determine the corrosion resistance of the workpiece. The value of surface
roughness between the chrome specimens without going through the SST test and
those through the SST test shows that the surface of the chrome specimens with the
test is rougher than without the test, because the SST test uses several solutions such
as salt that are sprayed onto the specimen which makes the specimen corrode. The
results of the corrosion resistance test on Lever Speed Control with the Salt Spray
Test method for 48 hours showed that the specimens that were not coated with
nickel chrome electroplating experienced a very clear change compared to the
specimens that were coated with nickel chrome electroplating.
SST testing greatly affects the thickness of the nickel chrome layer, the
nickel chrome layer is corroded by the NaCL solution. The highest layer thickness
was 65.60 m in nickel chrome coated specimens without going through SST and
the lowest thickness was 36.08 m in nickel chrome coated specimens and through
SST testing.
