Abstract
Introduction : Suicide is the third leading cause of death worldwide. Most of the victims of
attempted suicide were taken to the Emergency Unit (IGD) of public hospitals for treatment.
Emergency nurse response has an important role in determining the success of treatment in patients
with attempted suicide.Aim to explore the response of emergency room nurses in general hospitals
in dealing with clients with suicide attempted .
Methods: This research is a type of qualitative research using a phenomenological approach. Data
collection using in-dept interview method with semi-structured questions. The number of
participants in the study were 7 emergency room nurses at PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital in the
Yogyakarta area who had treated patients with suicide attempted. The sampling technique in this
study was done by purposive sampling. Analysis of the data in this study using the method
according to Collaizi.
Results: This study found 5 themes, namely 1) talking to patients, 2) focusing on physical
problems, 3) asking colleagues for help, 4) having difficulty understanding the patient's condition
5) securing the patient and the environment.
Conclusion: nurses in dealing with patients with suicide attempted have difficulty and still focus
on physical problems. Nurses need emergency psychiatric protocols and training from hospitals.
