Abstract

This study aims to determine the role of parents in children learning during COVID-19 pandemic in Kemejing Village, Semin District, Gunungkidul Regency. It is understood that during COVID-19 pandemic, the role of parents is still lacking. Parents tend not to pay attention to children development such as accompanying, supervising, and guiding their children. As a result, the children's lives during the pandemic are spent to play each day. They also put aside studying and doing schoolwork. The research type was qualitative. The subjects in this study were selected based on the following criteria, namely: school-age children aged between 7-12 years, elementary school children, and children living together with their parents who take care of and meet the needs of children both material and non-material. The data collection techniques used in this study were interviews and documentation with the following indicator variables: (1) parental roles, (2) parental obligations, (3) parental functions, (4) children learning, and (5) online learning. The data analysis used descriptive qualitative technique. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The parents must always motivate their children in doing online learning and serve as the facilitators for their children in online learning so that the children have a high enthusiasm in learning. (2) Parents should always give advice and always be a good example and teach the children to have a good discipline. Giving good and appropriate advice so that the children can always perform good discipline in everyday life both at home or at school. (3) Parents are expected to always accompany their children to study in their free time. Accompanying and guiding children in learning is the most important thing in children learning process during the pandemic and online learning period so that the children will feel they have friends for studying. It is also expected that the children's enthusiasm will improve in each time they study online or do schoolwork. (4) It is important to give attention and advice, to protect and to love the children deeply and sincerely, and to spare time to be with the children even if it's just sharing each other’s stories.
