Abstract
This research is aimed to determine the concept of humanities education in the perspective of George Abraham Makdisi which is oriented back to the movement that studies the original/pure source of science. This is a library research based on the work of George Abraham Makdisi entitled The Rise of Humanism in Classical Islam and The Cristian West as the primary sources and the library sources such as books, journals, theses, papers, and other types of relevant literature as the secondary sources. Documentation was used as the collection method which was then analyzed using content analysis technique. The findings of the research show the concept of humanities education according to Makdisi includes (1) a series of processes that is systematically arranged that is aimed at creating a society who is literate in understanding language and communicating with others, being well-informed about history, and is highly dedicated to the country through restudying the original sources or documents. (2) creating experts who are analogous to the scales’ makers who have nothing to weigh. Others find the scales, and use them to weigh pearls, gems, gold, and precious gemstones. (3) the educators consist of astronomers or astrology experts, calligraphers, manuscript copyists (publishers), legal experts, traders (economists), notaries, doctors, government ambassadors, trusted assistants to leaders or representatives, officers of the chief administrative office , court orators, court poets, prime ministers, secretaries of state, historians, and tutors or private teachers who base their teachings on the ability to master the science of tools (language, literature, and culture). 4) the students are those who are able to adjust their passion to the field of science and the teachers who will guide them. (5) the subjects of teaching are grammar, poetry, eloquence (balagah), oratory (rhetoric), epistolary art (the art of writing letters), history, and moral philosophy. Moreover, (6) the teaching methods used are memorization, muzakarah and munazarah methods, tools for dictation writers, tadris (teaching), and self-taught learning.
