Abstract

Motivation is one of the driving factors to achieve success in learning English. This
study aimed to determine the level of student motivation in learning English at an Islamic
Junior High School in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi and to determine the type of student
motivation in learning English at an Islamic Junior High School in Buton, Southeast
Sulawesi. This study applied a quantitative research approach with survey research design.
Questionnaires were used for data collection technique. The data were obtained from 95
students who were involved in responding to the list of questions. They were from grade 7
which consisted of 50 students and grade 8 which consisted of 45 students. The data of this
research were analyzed by using descriptive statistics in statistical tool program. The results
revealed that the level of student motivation in learning English at Islamic Junior High
School in South Buton was at the moderate level with mean value of 79.7. The highest type
of student motivation in learning English was the intrinsic motivation type with a mean score
of 70. Meanwhile, the lowest of students’ motivation in learning English is extrinsic
motivation with a mean score of 62. It can be concluded that the students' motivation to learn
English is moderate. The most dominant type of student motivation in learning English is
intrinsic motivation. Thus, teachers need to provide more motivation so that students are
enthusiastic and active to achieve success in learning English.
