Abstract

Writing creative writing in English is one of the challenges faced by EFL
students. They find it difficult to express their ideas while still paying attention to
grammar rules. While some research said that creative thinking is more important
than the rules. This research aims to know the level of students’ grammar mastery,
the level of students’ creative writing performance, and to know if there is any
correlation between students’ grammar mastery and their creative writing
performance. Quantitative approach was used to do the research. There were 54
students who became participants in this research from the students who joined
the Literary Appreciation Course and the students who already took the TOEFLpaper-based-like Test batch 2018 and 2019. The instrument of this study was
documentation. The result of this research showed that the level of ELED
students’ grammar mastery is 40.314 which is categorized as low level. In
addition, the level of ELED students’ creative writing performance is 19.92 which
is categorized as very high. This research found that the p-value is 0.004, which
means that there is a significant correlation between ELED students’ grammar
mastery and their creative writing performance. The r-score of this research is
0.362, which is categorized as moderate category. It means that there is moderate
correlation between ELED students’ grammar mastery and their creative writing
performance.
