Abstract

The cooperative learning method is believed to help students in solving a
problem in groups. The effort used by students to solve problems is to think
critically. This study aims to find out students' attitude towards the
implementation of cooperative learning in the Covid-19 pandemic, to determine
the level of students' critical thinking, and to investigate the correlation between
ELED Students' attitudes toward the implementation of cooperative learning
method process of learning English in the Covid-19 pandemic and the level of
students' critical thinking at one of the private university in Yogyakarta. This
study used a quantitative approach with a correlation design. This research also
used questionnaires as the research instruments. The data was obtained from
students majoring in English education at a private university in Yogyakarta batch
2018, which consisted of 137 respondents. The questionnaire consists of 10 items
to measure students' attitudes toward cooperative learning methods, and 13 items
to measure the level of students' critical thinking skills. The data were analyzed
using descriptive statistics in the statistical analysis program and Pearson Product
Moment Correlation (r). The results showed that students' attitudes towards the
implementation of cooperative learning methods are included in the "fair"
category with a mean score of 2.95, while the level of students' critical thinking
skills is in the "advanced" level category with a mean score of 3.10. The
Correlation Pearson Product Moment (r) shows that the value is 0.000, which
means that there is a significant relationship between the two variables because
the significant value is 0.000 <0.05. In addition, the Pearson Correlation value (rvalue) is 0.302 which is included in the category of "weak" correlation. Thus, it
can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (H1) in this study is accepted so
that there is a significant relationship between students' attitudes towards
cooperative learning and the level of students' critical thinking skills during the
Covid-19 pandemic, but the relationship is included in the category of weak
correlation.
