Abstract

TOEFL is a test to measure English proficiency. The students take TOEFL test to identify their language proficiency especially English skill. Besides, TOEFL score is used as a requirement for graduating from one of the private universities in Yogyakarta. In addition, TOEFL scores can be used to continue study and to apply for jobs. This study aimed to find out the challenges faced by EFL students’ in doing PBT TOEFL on reading section. The researcher formulated one question namely "what are the challenging factors in doing PBT TOEFL faced by EFL students' in the reading section”. In collecting the data, the researcher used a qualitative research design. The researcher also used the interview method to reveal the data. The participants of this research were three students of the English Language Education Department in one private university. The participants were two male and female students. Based on the result of the research, there were four challenges faced by the students in doing PBT TOEFL on reading section. The challenges were, understanding the main idea/topic, limited vocabulary, reference questions, and time management.
