Abstract
This research discusses about “Metaphor and Metonymy of Japanese in Natsume
Soseki's Novel Botchan” viewed from a cognitive linguistic review. In learning a
language, there are words that have multiple meanings. The emergence of multiple
meanings is an expansion of the meaning that is described through metaphors and
metonymy. The aim of this research is to describe the meaning of metaphor and
metonymy and the expansion of the meaning. The data in this research were taken
from a Japanese novel entitled Botchan which consists of chapters 1-11. This
research used a qualitative descriptive method where the data obtained were
analyzed and described based on the expansion of the meaning of metaphors and
metonymy with a cognitive linguistic approach. The result of this study indicated
that there were 28 data which were divided into metaphor and metonymy groups.
Metaphors were consisted of 13 data from structural metaphor groups with 3 data,
orientational metaphors with 1 data, ontological metaphors with 8 data, and channel
metaphors with 1 data. The metonymy were 15 data and consisted of 7 data of based
on time proximity, 6 data of cause and effect relationships, 1 data of part and whole
relationship, 1 data owner and owner part. The expansion of the meaning of
metaphorical and metonymy language styles occurs due to different experiences of
human cognition due to the social and cultural factors of society that influence the
formation of the expansion of metaphorical and metonymy meaning.
