Abstract

Background: In the last decade, the percentage of doctors doing research is declining. The decreasing
number of doctors doing research might result from the lack of awareness among medical students on
doing research during their studies. Therefore, more attention is needed in research education among
medical students. The impact of the medical students not getting enough understanding in research is
the difficulty to manage a research project. By training and conducting a research-based activity as seen
in a research-based organization, a research-based organization can be an alternate solution to
increase medical students’ interest in research.
Method: This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional research methodology, using a
validated, self-administered online questionnaire. Medical students in Indonesia joining research based
organization (SCORE CIMSA-ISMKI) were voluntarily filling the questionnaire. The research data is
analyzed using logistic regression analysis.
Results: The responses from 74 medical students show that the factors influencing the increment of
medical students’ interest in research involves the willingness to join the organization (p = 0.006), the
adequate contribution of given knowledge in research (p = 0.023), and the increment of knowledge (p
= 0.019) and skill (p = 0.001) in research.
Conclusion: A research-based organization influences the improvement of the medical students’ interest
in research.
