Abstract

Fuel requirements, especially of petroleum continues to increase along with
the growth of the industry, economic and population growth. However, the
availability of petroleum is running low and will run out within a certain period.
Diesel fuel is petroleum as a diesel engine fuel, to reduce the use of diesel fuel,
biodiesel is made from vegetable oil. This research uses jatropha oil and waste
cooking oil biodiesel fuel with 2:3 composition. The mixture will be combined with
diesel oil in the ratio of 5% biodiesel - 95% diesel (B5), 10% biodiesel - 90% diesel
(B10), 15% biodiesel - 85% diesel (B15) and 20% biodiesel - 80% diesel ( B20).
The purpose of this study was to determine the performance of diesel engines when
using pure diesel fuel, variations of B5, B10, B15, and B20.
The first thing to do in this research is testing the physical properties of the
fuel in the form of density, viscosity, flash point, and heat value. Then the diesel
engine performance testing and injection characteristics testing using pure diesel
fuel, B5, B10, B15, and B20. Data from tests that have been carried out will be
processed, analyzed and made conclusions. All tests were carried out at the UMY
Mechanical Engineering Laboratory.
The results obtained are pure diesel fuel which has a higher power compared
to variations of B5, B10, B15, and B20. The specific fuel consumption of pure
diesel fuel is lower than the variations of B5, B10, B15 and B20 so pure diesel is
more efficient (economical). Injection characteristic test results show that the
variation of B20 fuel has the longest spray and the smallest spray angle. The shortest
spray is owned by solar pure and the biggest spray angle
