Abstract
The purpose of this study was to know toxic doses of oral administration of
piperine. The examined parameter was histological changes in mice’s lung. This
study was quasi-experimental research with posttest only control group design.
The test material was ethanolic extract of Piper nigrum L called piperine.
Samples are 30 strains BALB/c mices were devided into 5 groups: control group
(administrated with corn oil) and 4 treatment groups (administrated with piperine
dose 17,5mg/kgBW, 35mg/kgBW, 70mg/kgBW and 140mg/kgBW). Each group
was treated within 21 days. On 22nd day mices were sacrificed and the lungs were
collected to be made into histological preparation with HE staining. Data is the
mean value of interalveolare septum thickness. The result is 4.41 ± 0.41 (control),
4.84 ± 0.75 (17,5mg/kgBW), 5.81 ± 1.96 (35mg/kgBW), 6.29 ± 2.64 (70mg/kgBB)
and 9.10 ± 2.04 (140mg/kgBW). The thickness of interalveolar septum was
increased while the dose of piperin is increasing. Data analysis with One Way
ANOVA show significant difference on the interalveolar septum thickness
(p<0.05) and post hoct LSD test show that only treatment group at a dose of
140mg/kgBW had a significant difference if compared with control group and
other treatment groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, oral administration of piperine
can causes toxic effect in mice’s lungs at a dose of 140mg/kgBW
