Abstract
Growth that occurs in the jaw, both the maxilla and the mandible has 3
directions, namely lateral, sagittal and vertical. Jaw growth and development in
children can be distrupted and become abnormal if there are prolonged bottle
feeding, the severity are influenced by the frequency, duration, and intensity of the
habits. The subjects used in this research are children aged 8-9 years which is the
period of mixed teeth and important stage in the tooth growth and development.
The purpose of this research is to examine the correlation between frequency and
duration of bottle feeding to sagittal jaw growth in children aged 8-9 years.
This type of research is observational analytic with cross sectional
approach. The population in this research are children aged 8-9 years who are
studying at SD Muhammadiyah Purwodiningratan 1 and 2, Ngampilan, Yogyakarta
City, Special Region of Yogyakarta. Data collection techniques used questionnaires
filled out by students’ parents and molding of maxillary and mandibular teeth on
the subject, then meassuring the sagittal jaw obtained from the length of the
anterior and posterior dental arches. The statistical test used is the Spearman
correlation test.
The results showed no correlation between frequency and duration of bottle
feeding on anterior and posterior arch lengths, both maxilla and mandible. Based
on these results, it can be concluded that there is no correlation between the
frequency and duration of bottle feeding to sagittal jaw growth in children aged 8-
9 years
