Abstract

Empu: Sugar on the Weaver’s Chair was a movie that told about three
girls who have spirit not only for living their daily life, but also for reaching their
desire that was opposed by their closest people. This movie described in each
stories how the gender relations was occurred. This research’s aim was to see how
the movie narrated the gender relations between woman and man. This research
used descriptive qualitative method with documentation and literature review to
collect the data. Researcher used movie’s literature review as mass
communication media, narration of the movie and concept of the gender, role and
gender relations. Narrative analysis method with Tzevan Todorov narration
structure approach and aktan A. J. Greimas were also used in this study. The
result showed that the gender relations that have been narrated in this movie were
dominated by man caused a limitation for women to act in public. It happened
because social construction within the society. In the end of the movie, there were
part that described an equality for women, but it only happened due to the certain
situation which man had to face, not because of the value of the gender equality.
