Abstract

Background: One problem that cannot be solved at this time is smoking. Various attempts to
stop smoking have been made such as publications about the dangers and negative effects of
smoking, but smoking habits in the community are still difficult to stop. Indonesia is the third
largest country of cigarette users in the world and ranks first with a percentage of 46.16%.
An increasing problem of smoking in Indonesia, the latest trend emerged among adolescents,
namely the use of e-cigarettes as an effort to stop smoking.
Objective: To explore the perceptions of active smokers in the Vaporizer Community in
Yogyakarta about the use of e-cigarettes.
Research Methods: The research method used in this study was a descriptive qualitative study
whose research was carried out in February in the Yogyakarta Special Province of the
Vapenatics Vapestore and Beats Cloud Vapor Community members. Qualitative data were
taken from 9 participants from Focus Group Discussion and 4 participants on in-depth
interview. The analysis used in this study is content analysis.
Results: Based on the analysis content obtained 10 themes and 28 subthemes. The ten great
themes include ' vapor definition ', ' early experience of vaping behaviour ', ' reasons for
starting vaping behaviour ', ' reason persist in vaping ', ' the health effects posed from smoking
behavior ', ' benefits and dangers of cigarette and vapor use ', ' source of funds during vaping
', ' the view to stop vaping ', and ' views on the effectiveness of vape as a smoking cessation’.
Conclusion: In this study there were 13 participants divided into 9 FGD participants and 4
participants in depth interviews. Users of electric cigarettes perceive electrical cigarettes
according to their respective experiences, participants started vaping with the aim of
switching from cigarettes or reducing cigarettes and not feeling addicted. They say that the
nicotine in the vape is lower than cigarettes until it is easier to stop. Most participants are
comfortable with the use of vape and there is no intention to stop vaping because it gets
pleasure from vaping is a better taste and steam resulting from vaping much more than
conventional cigarettes. They ignored even rejecting the research results on the dangers of
electric cigarettes (vapor) and still believe that vapes are safer compared to conventional
cigarettes.
