Abstract

Nowadays, teachers do not only share knowledge to the learners to achieved learning goal but they also have to facilitate them to do learning process. As prospective teachers, the students of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta are required to have competence in teaching. Therefore, one way to measure the students teaching ability is by the microteaching activities. In preparing the students to be able to teach well, feedbacks is an important factor that could help the students to improve their teaching performance. Feedbacks show the students their strengths and weaknesses in teaching, so the student could develop the strengths and fix their weaknesses. Thus the researcher interested in find out how the students’ perceive lecturer’s feedbacks on microteaching and what are the effects of lecturer’s feedbacks in improving their teaching performance. In attempts to conduct the research, the qualitative research design was employed to answer the research questions. Six participants were involved in this research. The six participants were the students of English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2010 who had taken Classroom Management course (KP252). The researcher used in-depth interview and also member checking to check the validity of the interview. The result of the first research questions shows that the majority of the students perceived that lecturer’s feedback as something important, influenced, and motivated then it was resulting on the improvement of their teaching performance. The lecturer’s feedbacks were helpful for students to see their strengths to be developed and their weaknesses to be improved. Besides, the students used lecturer’s feedbacks that provided suggestion and explanation about teaching performance as consideration in making improvement of their teaching skill. The result of the second research questions reveals to the effects of the lecturer’s feedbacks in improving students teaching performance shows that there are some positive effects toward their teaching performance, among others: the students became aware about the importance of teaching material preparation, how to planning lesson, selects teaching method and teaching technique properly, the students became aware how to overcome the difficulties they faced when teaching, the students became more learn about how to delivered teaching material properly and creatively, how to used teaching media properly accordance with teaching material to be taught, and how to make a good interaction with the pupils in the class. Then, based on the lecturer’s feedbacks the students became aware that there are many kinds of activities in the end of lesson to determine the level of pupils understanding toward the lesson they have taught.
