Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the lecturers’ perceptions on CALL implementation at EED UMY. This study was conducted in two reasons; first there are many applications of computer to support teaching English but not all the lecturers used applications of computer. Second, many resources of information from the internet but not all the students in EED UMY used internet maximally. This study was guided by three research questions: 1) What are lecturers’ perception on the advantages of CALL in EED UMY? 2) What are the problems faced by English teachers in implementation CALL in EED UMY? 3) What are the solutions of these problems in implementation CALL in EED UMY? This study aims at exploring advantages of CALL in the English teaching. Besides, this study identified the problems of CALL in English teaching. Further, it also found out the solution of these problems of CALL in the English teaching. Qualitative case study was used by the researcher as approach. The setting of the study was the English Education Department Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta with three lecturers. To obtain the data was through interviews with the participants. For data analysis, the result from the interview were coded and categorized. This study found some advantages in using CALL, problem faced in implementation of CALL, and solutions to those problems. The respondent stated three of advantages in using CALL, they are; CALL as learning media, CALL promoted the students independent learning, CALL facilitated the students with various abilities, with CALL, classroom atmosphere became more interesting. In the other hand, the problems faced by lecturers in implementation of CALL were internet connection in EED UMY which did not support CALL maximally, lecturers were difficult to control the students learning in using CALL, lecturers also need more time to prepare the material using CALL, and software were not sufficiently available. Then, they found the solutions to those problems. Lecturers tried to find reliable internet connection, lecturers made a policy in learning using CALL, and lecturer made the materials simple and effective, and lecturers also have to asked the expert for making software
