Abstract

As one of the four main English language skills, speaking plays an important role in English language learning. However, speaking as a productive skill has some difficulties in its process to become a good speaker. There are many activities to improve the skill. One of those activities is debate. In the English Education Department UMY, there is an English debate club that any students of EED can join. Even so, there is only a little number of students who join the debate club. The student must understand the differences of speaking skill mastery of students who joined the debate club and who do not join. It can be a good consideration for the students to join the debate club. The quantitative comparative research was employed to answer the research questions; is there any differences in speaking skill among students who join debate club with students who didn’t join the debate club, and the second research questions is what speaking elements are affected by debating skills. Debate club members and some students of EED become the respondents of this research. There are two variables in this research. The first variables are speaking skill of debater and the second one is speaking skill of non-debater. The instrument of this research is the question from IELTS like test. The students speaking skill from both of sample was investigated in order to answer the research questions. The result on the differences between debater and non-debater showed that the magnitude of differences between the mean of both groups shown on the column Mean Difference was 1.28. The value was positive. The statistical calculation research showed that significance score of debate member speaking skill and non-debate members was <0,05. There were any differences final score between speaking skill among students who joined debate club from students who did not join debate club in English Education Department of UMY. It shown by positive value mean different. it mean that the first group sample (debate member) have higher score than second group sample (non-debate member). Furthermore, the significant score showed value is <0,05 which means it have significant difference. A group of debate members have a higher score of all aspect of speaking. Therefore, the hypothesis “there is a significant difference between students’ speaking ability who join the debate club and the students who not join in English Education Department in UMY” is accepted.
