Abstract
The purposes of this research are to explain and add insights to the Japanese
strategy on managing territorial disputes of Senkaku Islands. This research also
has a research question, namely, “How does Japan manage the territorial
disputes with China on Senkaku Islands?”. This research will explain the process
of resolving the territorial disputes between Japan and China, which the
researcher use theoretical framework namely, “Negotiation and Mediation
theory” by Dean G. Pruitt and Peter J. Carnevale in order to analyze and explain
more about the kinds of negotiation between Japan and China in solving the
territorial disputes of Senkaku Islands. The method used in this research is
secondary data, which the researchers indirectly used data through an
intermediary medium. Intermediary used by the writer is quoting from various
source such as Japan Ministry of Defense reports, books, journals, articles and
the resources that supporting it, such as documents that have relevance to the
issues to be studied, for enrichment data or expansion of the material, the
researcher will use data obtained from the Internet. The result of this research
after analyzing the negotiations on territorial disputes over Senkaku Islands
using Negotiation and Mediation theory is the researcher finally found that the
process of territorial disputes negotiations between Japan and China over
Senkaku Islands has a variety of dynamics, In which the two countries went
through a number of Contending strategy at the beginning of the negotiation
process, then proceed with the Yielding or Concession strategy and accompanied
by Inaction strategy by Japan and China to find the right way to produce a
solution and finally proceed with the Problem Solving strategy, where both
parties agreed to stop the territorial disputes over Senkaku Islands by holding a
Joint Development.
