Abstract
This study discusses how the communication patterns in conflict interactions in premarital couples who experience toxic relationships. It is undeniable that in a relationship, humans cannot avoid conflict. Destructive conflict in relationships can trigger toxic relationships that can damage and destroy the relationship itself. Toxic relationships are toxic relationships with unsupportive attitudes, destructive conflicts, competition, disrespect, and lack of cohesiveness. The method used in this research is descriptive. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews. The technique of testing the validity of the data can be done with the source triangulation technique. The data analysis technique in this study uses the analysis of the Miles and Huberman model, namely starting with data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study found that conflicts experienced by pre-marital couples who experience toxic relationships stem from different goals, poor communication, and lack of fulfillment of needs. The results showed that both partners used destructive communication patterns to maintain a toxic relationship. The first partner uses the avoidance conflict style and the second partner uses the compromise conflict style. The communication patterns adopted are also different, namely the pattern of unbalanced separation in the first pair and the pattern of balance in the second pair. The decision to maintain a toxic relationship between the two partners is influenced by the sexual activity that has been carried out by both partners.
