Abstract
Background: Obesity is excess fat due to failure of body metabolism. Compared to mothers with normal weight, mothers with obesity have a higher risk of pregnancy disorders and are considered to cause metabolic changes, especially its impact on fetal lipid profile so that they are at greater risk for cardiovascular disorders in later life. This study aims to determine the difference of fetal serum cholesterol level from normal BMI mothers and obese mothers as a marker of cardiovascular diseases in adulthood Research Method: This study was an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional design, involving 28 pregnant women without complications who gave birth at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital. Obesity was defined as pre-pregnancy BMI ≥25 kg/m2 . Serum total cholesterol measured from maternal venous blood and umbilical cord blood after birth. Results: Fetal serum cholesterol level of obese mothers were higher than normal BMI mothers with the mean difference was 12.52 mg/dL and had significant different p-value (p=0.015). There was no significant difference between cholesterol levels of normal and obese BMI mothers (p=0.973). There was a significant association between maternal BMI and fetal cholesterol level (p=0.025) but maternal BMI and maternal cholesterol level not significantly related (p=1,000). Fetal cholesterol level didn’t have significant association with maternal cholesterol (p=1,000). Conclusion: There was a significant difference between fetal serum cholesterol level of normal and obese mothers. It was caused by the obesity before pregnancy and not affected by maternal cholesterol level.
