Abstract
Japanese language learners still have difficulty in learning Japanese, especially in learning kanji which is still the main obstacle in learning and mastering Japanese, this also applies to students of the Japanese Language Education Study Program, University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Because there are still difficulties in learning Japanese, many learning media have been created both theoretically and using technology. Learning media that use technology have been created and developed on Android and IO, especially in the use of smartphones like today. Learning media that use smartphones are in the form of Japanese language learning applications, one example is the Japanese Kanji Learning application which focuses on learning kanji starting from the meaning of a kanji, how to read kanji, the number of strokes, and how to write kanji. To find out whether the application of the Japanese Kanji Study is effective in studying kanji, research was conducted using the experimental method on first-year students as a research method and research sample. To help complete the experiment on the Japanese Kanji Study application, tests and non-tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of the application. After the tests and non-tests were carried out, the results showed that the Japanese Kanji Study application had not been effectively used in improving the ability to write kanji based on the scores obtained from the tests that had been carried out, but it could improve understanding and improve the ability to understand kanji based on the answers to the questionnaire given. Judging from the results that have been obtained, it is recommended for further researchers to choose an easy and interesting application and complete kanji which is equivalent to JLPT as a reference or equivalent to JLPT.
