Abstract
Background: Adolescents are an age group with a psychosocial development crisis in the form of identity versus role confusion, so they are very concerned about their self-esteem. Self-esteem is an evaluation of oneself which is determined by the characteristics possessed by others as a comparison. One of the factors that influence adolescent self-esteem is self-presentation. Self-presentation is an individual's way of managing the individual's self-image in front of others according to the desired criteria. Instagram is a platform that allows teenagers to do self-presentation through uploaded photos/videos to attract other individuals. According to a survey by A. Jackson in 2017, Instagram is the second most popular social media platform with 59% of its users are teenagers and can have both positive and negative impacts according to its use. Methods: This study used an observational design with a cross sectional approach to determine the Relationship between Self-presentation on Instagram and adolescent Self-esteem at SMA Negeri 1 Purworejo. The research subjects were 215 teenagers who filled out research questionnaires online. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling technique. The research variables were measured using the Rosenberg self-esteem scale and the self-presentation scale on Instagram. The data analysis method used was Spearman's correlative test. Results: the results of calculations using the Spearman's rho correlation technique obtained a correlation coefficient value of 0.147; (p) = 0.031 (p<0.05). It shows that there is a significant relationship between self-presentation on Instagram and adolescent self-esteem at SMA Negeri 1 Purworejo. A positive correlation value means that the higher the self-presentation on Instagram social media, the higher the adolescent's self-esteem will also be. The correlation strength value of 0.147 indicates a weak category of relationship strength between self-presentation and self-esteem. Conclusion: there is a relationship between self-presentation on Instagram social media and adolescent self-esteem at SMA Negeri 1 Purworejo
