Abstract

Guidance and Counseling (Bimbingan dan Konseling/BK) teachers in school are very important in handling the mental health of broken home students, in which health is one of the important needs and needed by every human being to carry out all activities such as work, worship and also to seek knowledge. In addition, BK teachers also play an important role in improving the learning spirit of the students. The purposes of the research conducted are (1) describing the function of BK in overcoming problems in the mental health of the students who experienced broken home (2) explaining mental health problems in children from broken home families (3) explaining supporting and inhibiting factors from BK teachers in overcoming mental health problems of the children of broken home families. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out with observations, interviews and documentation. The research results of the Role of Guidance and Counseling Teachers in Overcoming Mental Health of Broken Home Family Students were BK teachers have carried out their roles well. Reviewed from the making of planning and implementation of BK programs towards the students of broken home families, BK teachers have also carried out classical guidance, group guidance, and individual guidance. Moreover, the methods used by BK teachers were using reality and behavior methods. Mental health problems felt by the students of broken home families in Muhammadiyah 1 Gamping Junior High School included depression, sensitive, and trauma. Supporting factors of BK teachers were individual counseling programs, cooperation with homeroom teachers, home visits, and extracurricular activities. BK teachers also had inhibiting factors in carrying out their role, namely the background of the parents of the students who did not want to be invited to cooperate.
