Abstract
This research aimed to describe the forms of speech acts with noda modality, the types of speech acts, and the meaning of the illocutionary use of noda modality in the novel "Madogiwa no Totto-chan". The data were obtained from the speech contained in the novel by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi entitled "Madogiwa no Tottochan" as the research subject and the use of noda modality as the object of the research. This paper used the simak-catat method to collect the data. The data that has been collected was analyzed using Miles and Huberman's data analysis technique. To analyze the use of noda in the novel, Austin and Searle's speech act theory was used by considering Leech's aspect speech situasion. This paper used the simak-catat method to collect the data. The data analysis technique uses the interactive theory of Miles and Huberman. From the results of the research, it is known that there are 20 forms of speech acts using the ~noda modality in the novel "Madogiwa no Totto-Chan", ~nda and ~ndesu form are the most common. From the five types of speech acts according to Searle, four types of illocutionary acts emerged, namely in the assertive, commissive, expressive and directive categories. There are 18 illocutionary meanings that appear in the use of the stain modality in the novel, affirming and arguing are the meanings that appear the most.
