Abstract

Asynchronous learning is one of the methods used for studying during the pandemic. Some students found difficulties in learning through asynchronous learning. This study aimed to know the students' strategies in understanding the material in asynchronous learning and their challenges. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. For collecting the data, the researcher used interviews with six participants from the English Education Department at one of the private universities in Yogyakarta. From the results, the students’ strategies were reading the material, looking for additional material, making a note and summary, watching the video, learning independently, studying together, translating the material, asking the friend and the teacher, and boosting the mood. Meanwhile, the challenges that students felt were exhaustion, difficulty in comprehension, lack of confidence, absence of help, and mood swing. Based on the results and conclusions that have been discussed, the researcher provided suggestion that students can manage their mood and time for learning well. Also, students can be more active in asking questions in order to help understand the learning material.
