Abstract

Background: Gout arthritis is a disease that arises from the precipitation of uric
acid in the joints. The level of uric acid in the blood exceeds normal will cause
inflammatory reactions that cause swelling, redness, painful pain, until a defect in
the joints of the hand or foot and can lead to the formation of uric acid stones in the
kidneys or bladder. The prevalence of Indonesian gout arthritis sufferers continues
to increase and tends to enter the younger age of the productive age, which later
affects the decline in working productivity. The prevalence of suffering from gout
athritis in Indonesia continue to increasing every year. One of the complementary
therapies that can reduce uric acid levels in the body is wet cupping.
Research Objectives: To determine the effect of wet cupping therapy on total uric
acid, identify the characteristics of respondents according to age, and determine the
differences in groups who received cupping therapy and who didn’t get cupping
therapy.
Research Methods: This research is an experimental research using the QuasyExperiment method in the form of pretest - posttest with intervention control group
design. The population in this study were male students of PSIK UMY who were
in good health. 44 The sample was selected using a purposive sampling technique
calculated using the Slovin formula. To determine the effect of pre-post and
differences in the control and intervention groups using Wilcoxon and MannWhitney tests because the data are not normally distributed.
Results: The average age of respondents was known in the control and intervention
groups aged 20.36 years. In the control group the pre uric acid value was 4.8773
mg/dl to 5.1455 mg/dl when the post test was performed. In the intervention group
the pre uric acid value was 4.7591 mg/dl to 4.3955 mg/dl when the post test was
conducted. Wilcoxon test in the control group obtained results p = 0.223 (p> 0.05)
and in the intervention group obtained results p = 0.184 (p> 0.05). The mann
whitney test in the pre test two groups obtained results p = 0.906 (p> 0.05), and in
the post tests with two group obtained results p = 0.048 (p <0.05).
Conclusion: Respondents in this study had an average age of 20.36 years, wet
cupping therapy in statistics has not yet affected the uric acid levels, however on
the average the intervention group after wet cupping therapy there was a tendency
to decrease compared to the control group.
