Abstract
The response to natural disasters carried out by Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center
(MDMC) volunteers through psychosocial service programs at the Donggala Kodi service post
is an activity that requires interpersonal communication strategies. This is due to a large
number of volunteers on duty as psychosocial teams but does not have the basic knowledge of
psychology or psychosocial skills. This study aims to describe aspects of interpersonal
communication and interpersonal communication strategies used by MDMC volunteers in
their services. This research method is descriptive qualitative through a phenomenological
approach. Data is collected through interviews, conversations, and documentation. The results
of this study include the implementation of aspects of interpersonal communication. The
interpersonal communication is considered important because the communication function
itself is related to the MDMC Service Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and the Principles
from Psychological First Aid (PFA) Action. In addition, interpersonal communication methods
are also applied in psychosocial services, including canalizing, informative and educative
methods. In planning an activity program, MDMC volunteers also use the communication
planning model by Philip Lesly.
