Abstract
As one of the prominent Islamic organization, Muhammadiyah contributes to many sectors, including da’wah (preaching), education, health, social empowerment, and politics. By using empirical-normative legal research method with historical, constitutional, and conceptual approaches, this research explains the vital role of Muhammadiyah in developing the Indonesian constitutional system. History has recorded numerous Muhammadiyah scholars were involved in developing the Indonesian constitutional system. For instance, during the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Independence (BPUPKI) and Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI) debates to formulate the Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution, Muhammadiyah scholars came up with their ideas to integrate Islamic values in state affairs, establishing a strong foundation for tolerance among religions in the country. Today, Muhammadiyah places its position in constitutional affairs to guard the principle of Rechtstaat (rule of law state) by opposing contradict laws through judicial review at the Constitutional Court of Indonesia, likewise, campaigning Constitutional Jihad and introducing Pancasila fundamental norms in the light of Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah (consented country for a peaceful living). Although Muhammadiyah does not define itself as a political party, the organization plays a strategic role in the political structure, especially as an interest group. The research suggested that Muhammadiyah must develop and share Islamic values into every Indonesian constitutional system process.
