Abstract

The 'Cool Japan' program is a policy based on soft power in promoting Japanese culture through popular culture of anime, manga, and video games. This study discusses why the “Cool Japan” program is able to influence Hong Kong people to travel to Japan motivated by anime and manga as an important component in this campaign. This study uses the concept of soft power, cultural diplomacy, nation branding, smart and cultural tourism. In this study using literature and media research methods. The data collected comes from books and journals concerned with the object of research. The writing of the analysis was done by descriptive method through interpretation. The results of the analysis carried out show that the 'Cool Japan' program is able to influence the people of Hong Kong to travel to Japan. There are strong indications that groups exposed to Japanese culture through mass media promotions such as the Cool Japan television program which visualizes Japanese culture and exhibitions or direct promotions carried out by the Japanese government to the people of Hong Kong through the Cool Japan program will be encouraged to travel to Japan
