Abstract
Self- management is the ability of oneself in planning and directing self-behavior to a
certain goal by involving at the cognitive, emotional, and social elements. Meanwhile,
social media dependence is having a high sense of attraction so that it results in the
desire to continuously use social media with excessive time with the aim of just looking
for self- satisfaction.
The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between self- management and
social media dependence in students that use social media. The hypothesis of this study
is that there is a correlation between self- management and social media dependence in
the students of Islamic Communication and Counseling Study Program class of 2017 at
Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The subjects in this study were 132 students
with a research sample of 66 students using purposive sampling technique.
The hypothesis test obtained a sig value of 0.000<0.05, so it was concluded that there
was a correlation between Self- Management and Social Media Dependence. Based on
the regression test, Pearson correlation coefficient value of -0.715 was obtained,
meaning that Self- Management had a negative and significant effect on Social Media
Addiction. Therefore, the higher the Self- Management, the lower the Social Media
Addiction and vice versa. In addition, the aspect of self- management provided a change
of 51% to social media dependence.
