Abstract

This research aims to reveal the representation of women’s beauty in Ernest Prakasa’s
movie Imperfect based on the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. This
research was a semiotic study and employed a descriptive qualitative method. The movie
which lasts more than one hour depicting a woman who is bullied by her family and
colleagues since she is not considered beautiful and does not meet the beauty standards.
The results show that in the movie Imperfect, the society represent the beauty of
Indonesian women is symbolized with those who have a slim body, fair skin, straight
black hair, smooth faces, and good fashion sense. The society are often trapped in the
meaning of “beautiful” due to massages transferred through the media. It is necessary to
build the community’s ability to be wiser in receiving messages from the media so that
the massages can be addressed and interpreted appropriately, intelligently, and wisely
