Abstract

Background : Healthcare services are the main topic because of the high
complexity challenges in the health sector. Especially for emergency department
which face the challenges of crowding, waiting times and cost containment.
Objective : to determine the implementation and the impact of Lean Hospital
approach in emergency department in order to decrease the overcrowding and
the length of stay in emergency department.
Methods : The research design used in this article is a literature review method
related to how Lean Hospital (lean thinking) can be applied in an emergency
department to address overcrowding and hospital admissions using database
including PUBMED, Sciencedirect, Researchgate and Google Scholar in the
period of 2012-2021. In this study, the researcher collected literature review data
with a thematic structure based on the concept of thinking using the keyword :
“Lean Hospital”, “Lean Implementation”, and “Emergency department” which
were compiled to answer scientific questions by grouping and discussing the
literature sources accordingly to the theme or topic.
Results : The results showed that lean hospital can minimize the length of stay,
increase patient satisfaction and increase staff satisfaction.
Conclusion : Lean hospital can minimize the length of stay and the overcrowding
in emergency department. Yet, need commitment and sustainability from all
aspects. Not only the top management, but also the entire frontline staff
