Abstract
A mentally disabled child is a child who experiences obstacles and
intellectual and mental development retardation far below the average. As a
result, they have difficulty in forming independence for self-development,
developing skills in producing a work of art, and increasing self-confidence in
adjusting to the school environment or community environment.
This study aims to find out the pattern of interpersonal communication
between teachers and students in forming independence in self-development
and increasing self-confidence in adjusting to the school environment and
community environment. In this case, the researcher looked at how the
communication patterns used by teachers in forming independence in mentally
disabled children. The research method used was a qualitative approach, which
explains the phenomenon by collecting data and then analyzing it to obtain a
conclusion.
From the research results, it can be said that the communication pattern
used by the teacher is a communication pattern that uses spoken language
accompanied by command sentences and redundant or repetition (repetition)
methods. This communication pattern is very effective in shaping the
independence of mentally disabled students.
