Abstract

Background: Hospital is a complex organizations that utilize many professionals
and resources to perform a variety of medical services. All of these things shape the
performance management system in hospital, therefore hospital management
systems are more challenging when compared to other industries. This makes
hospital management systems more challenging than other industries. To maintain
quality and performance in the midst of intense competition, it is necessary to
measure the performance. In order for performance measurement to be objective
and effective, appropriate instruments are needed. The use of the Balanced
Scorecard (BSC) as a performance measurement method has been widely used in
the industry, because it can help stakeholders to see more broadly with many
perspectives.
Objective: The purpose of this study is to find out how the implementation of the
BSC method in measuring hospital performance includes its benefits and abilities
in helping determine hospital strategy.
Methods: This research is literature review. Journals were searched through 2
databases, namely PubMed and SAGE Journals, then a critical assessment was
carried out on articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After
synthesizing the articles, an in-depth analysis was carried out on the articles.
Results: 103 (21 PubMed and 82 SAGE Journals) articles were found in the
database, then inclusion and exclusion criteria were implemented. After a critical
assessment, 9 articles were selected for analysis.
Conclusion: The results of the article review shows that the BSC method can be
implemented in measuring hospital performance because it is objective and
scientific, besides that the BSC method can also assist stakeholders in determining
the direction of organizational policies and the BSC method can help organizations
improve their performance.
