Abstract
Electroplating is a metal plating process by electrolysis through the use of direct
current (DC) and a chemical solution (electrolyte) which serves as a provider of
metal ions to form metal deposits (layers) on the cathode electrode. Electroplating
aims to produce a metal that is resistant to rust, increases usage time, and is
decorative. This study aims to determine the characterization of thecoating
electroplating on the water pump impeller, to determine the effect of roughness,
thickness and hardness of thecoating nickel chrome on the water pump impeller.
The specimen used in this study was a cast iron water pump impaller with nickel
chrome coated using a time of immersion in nickel electrolyte of 60 minutes and 40
seconds of immersion in a chrome solution, the current parameter used was 18
Ampere and used a voltage of 2.9 Volts. The roughness test was carried out using the
Roughness Tester, for testing the thickness of the coating the test equipment used was
the Olympus BX53M series, while thewas used to determine the hardness value
Vickers Hardness Tester.
The results show that the lowest roughness value is found in section 1 where in
section 1 is found in the specimen before being coated and is located in a part that is
easily accessible by the coating with an average value of 11.264 µm and the highest
value is found in section 5 which is a part that is difficult to reach by a layer that is
found in the specimen after coating with an average value of 67,013 µm. The results
obtained in the thickness test have different results with values in segment A 22.24
µm and segment B 7.1 µm, while the results of hardness testing show that there are
differences in hardness values in sections 1 and 2 because section 1 is aarea High
current with a value of the highest hardness is 1.779 VHN while part 2 is thearea Low
current with the highest hardness value of 1.375 VHN
