Abstract
This study analyzes the narrative of victims of racism in film 42 by using
narrative analysis. The purpose of this research in the film directed by Brian
Helgeland is to analyze the narrative in film 42 so that findings regarding the
narrative and character of Jackie Robinson can be explained in more detail. The
analytical methods used in this study is the narrative technique of Tzetan Todorov,
the actant and quadrilateral opposition models from Algirdas Greimas. This method is
also used to determine the relationship between characters and their positions. Film
42 tells the story of African American baseball players in the American baseball
league, the results in the film show that Brian Helgeland narrates the victim of
racism, namely Jackie Robinson as an attempt to overcome racism that was still
prevalent at that time by showing the struggles of a character, namely Jackie
Robinson and how did he respond in response to these racist acts.
Film 42 is one of the films that tells the life journey of an important figure that
describes how the figure struggles to overcome it. The racist treatment directed at
Jackie Robinson did not bring him down and he managed to show that the African
American race deserves to be on the same field as the white race without the need for
segregation. The narrative in film 42 shows that the African American race is not
inferior to the white race, they are also able to compete with the white race. As seen
in the film that Jackie really helped the Brooklyn Dodgers in the National League,
unlike the racist slurs that demeaned Jackie's presence in the League that came from
opposing club players, teammates and white audiences
