Abstract
As one of the participants of the 70th General Assembly of the United
Nations in 2015 which has produced new agreement, namely Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), Indonesia is responsible to conserve and
sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable
development. However, there are still many marine areas in Indonesia facing
problems, such as illegal, unreported, unregulated (IUU) fishing. This research
aims to identify and analyze the legal framework and government policies that
apply to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in
Indonesia. This legal research applies normative legal research with regulatory
and conceptual approaches. The result shows that the Indonesian Government
has contributed in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals with the
signing of the Presidential Decree Number 59 of 2017 concerning the
Implementation of Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals as a basis for
the formulation of strategic policies and stages in achieving SDGs for
conservation and sustainable use of marine resources in accordance with
national development. Yet, the implementation of the regulatory framework and
policies have not effective due to lack of law enforcement and low level of
public awareness.
