Abstract
Friction stir welding (FSW), is a metal welding method using heat
generated by friction between the tool and the workpiece to be welded. This
study aims to determine the maximum tensile strength, microstructure, and
hardness values. In this study, the material used is a different type of material,
namely aluminum 1100 and copper.
This study uses the parameters of the feed rate variation of 40 mm/minute,
50 mm/minute, 60 mm/minute, and 80 mm/minute with a rotational speed of
910 Rpm. The fixed parameters used in this study were a tilt angle of 1ᴼ, a
rotational speed of 910 Rpm, a pin tool diameter of 4 mm, a shoulder diameter
of 18 mm, and a feed depth of 0.8 mm. The machine used in this research is
the Aciera vertical milling machine.
The results obtained from the microstructure test are that the stir zone
area is an area that has finer grains compared to the base metal area and the
Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) area because the stir zone area is an area that is
directly exposed to heat during the welding process. The results of the
hardness test obtained are that the highest hardness value is found at a feed
rate of 60 mm/minute in the copper stir zone area of 129 VHN and the lowest
hardness value is found at a feed rate of 40 mm/minute in the aluminum stir
zone area of 35 VHN. The results of the tensile test explained that the value of
the highest tensile strength was at a feed rate of 60 mm/minute of 44.19 MPa
and the lowest tensile strength was at a feed rate of 40 mm/minute of 24.21
MPa. Of all the variations of the feed rate used, the feed rate of 60 mm/minute
is the most appropriate variation based on the tests carried out.
