Abstract
Background: Contact lenses are one of the medical tools that share sufferers
whose purpose is to replace eye glasses for patients who have low vision. But over
the times and technology, contact lenses that initially functioned as a substitute
for glasses for people with eye disorders are now changing into a fashion or style
attribute. The risk of irritation on the use of contact lenses, installation and
removal is very high if not done carefully, both handling and hygiene, so it is not
advisable to use the brand of contact lenses and use the brand of contact lenses
because they can interfere with eye comfort and eye health. This study was meant
to seek the adequacy of the correlation between contact lens usage and
conjunctivitis occurrence.
Method: This research was conducted in April 2018. The research design used by
researchers was quantitative with the Crossectional research method.
Respondents of this study were students of the Faculty of Medicine and Health,
Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University class of 2014-2016 who had been using
contact lenses for more than 6 months. Respondents were given a questionnaire
containing questions related to research.
Results: In this study, 30 research respondents were obtained, with 13
respondents experiencing conjunctivitis and 17 respondents not experiencing
conjunctivitis. The results of the Chi-Square statistical analysis on contact lens
use patterns showed a significant value, which was p = 0.001 (p <0.05).
Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between
the patterns of contact lens wear with conjunctivitis in FKIK Muhammadyah
University Yogyakarta students.
